Background/Company Origin
Tell us how Low Country Painting got started and what inspired you to launch the business here in Charleston?
Low Country Painting’s presence dates back to the 1980s. Low Country Painting, LLC was formed in 2004 by John Hodges through acquisition of our predecessor Low Country Painting Contractors, Inc which started up in 1984. I had the opportunity to acquire ownership in 2022.
What were some of the early challenges you faced getting the company off the ground?
Starting out as a new owner, the main challenge was centered around recruiting due to the labor shortages at that time.

What’s something home and business owners should know about painting in Charleston? Is there something unique living in a humid climate and on the coast people should be aware of?
Using premium grade paints will go a long way especially for exterior painting projects in Charleston. Investing in high quality, weather resistant coatings that will have your property looking its best longer versus settling for a low cost/ entry grade paint that doesn’t last.
What kind of paint products and tools do you prefer to use—and why?
We use Sherwin Williams and Pittsburgh Paint products primarily on our residential and commercial projects for their exceptional durability and zero, low VOC product offerings. Purdy / Wooster brushes and applicators are great for cutting-in walls or trim and provide a smooth finish.
Painting Tips for Charleston, SC Home and Business Owners
What advice would you give to someone considering a home repaint in Charleston?
Don’t wait too long. If your exterior paint is peeling, flaking, chalking or has excessive mildew building up, the home needs to be painted soon. Putting off the project only creates further issues like wood rot and siding board replacement.
Are there any common painting mistakes you see homeowners make when they try to DIY?
We frequently see home owners underestimate the time and effort involved to achieve a quality finish. Tackling larger repaints by yourself may not be worth the frustration and stress just to end up with a lower quality result. Leave it to the professional painters so your home is looking its best inside and out.
